How to focus a Cherenkov telescope
نویسنده
چکیده
Cherenkov telescopes image the Cherenkov emission from air showers. A priori, it is not obvious if the ‘best’ images are achieved by measuring Cherenkov photon angles, i.e. focusing the telescope at infinity, or by considering the air shower as an object to be imaged, in which case one might focus the telescope on the central region of the shower. The issue is addressed using shower simulations. Submitted to: J. Phys. G: Nucl. Phys. PACS numbers: 95.55.Ka How to focus a Cherenkov telescope 2

Analysis Strategy for Large-Zenith-Angle-Observations with the HEGRA Cherenkov Telescope CT1
Cherenkov telescope observations at zenith angles > 70o are capable of providing large collection areas. This improves the detection efficiency for photons at very high energies. In order to understand the telescope’s performance extended Monte Carlo studies have been made taking the first HEGRA Cherenkov telescope CT1 as an example. First results of these studies will be presented.
متن کاملWide-field prime-focus Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes: A systematic study
By means of third-order optical theory as well as ray-tracing simulations we have investigated the feasibility of wide-field imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes with a reflective prime-focus design. For a range of desired optical resolutions, we have determined the largest available field-of-view of single-piece spherical, singlepiece parabolic, tessellated spherical, tessellated parabolic...
متن کاملO ct 2 00 8 A 15 ◦ Wide Field of View Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescope
Contemporary imaging air Cherenkov telescopes (IACT) for ground-based very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy have prime focus optical design. Typically these telescopes have a (2−4) wide field of view (FoV). They use F/0.7-F/1.2 optics and provide (3−10) ′ resolution in the FoV. Generally, a well designed telescope that includes more than one optical element will offer some advantages not a...
متن کاملPrecision Measurement of Optical Pulsation using a Cherenkov Telescope
During 2003, a camera designed to measure the optical pulsations of pulsars was installed on a telescope of the H.E.S.S. array. The array is designed for γ-ray astronomy in the ∼ 100 GeV 100 TeV energy regime. The aims of this exercise were two-fold: to prove the pulsar timing capabilities of H.E.S.S. on all relevant time-scales, and to explore the possibility of performing sensitive optical pu...
متن کاملThe MAGIC Cherenkov Telescope for gamma ray astronomy
The Major Atmospheric Gamma ray Imaging Cherenkov Telescope (MAGIC) is in commissioning phase and will start to become fully operative by the end of 2003. Located at El Roque de los Muchachos in La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain), it has the largest reflector area (17 m diameter) of all the existing Cherenkov telescopes. New technologies have been used to reduce the energy threshold for gamma-ray...
